Red Sox Surprise Trade Land $56 Million Cy Young Award Winner

Earlier this offseason, the Boston Red Sox made a major move by acquiring Chicago White Sox ace Garrett Crochet. Crochet is anticipated to be the leader of the Red Sox rotation after an impressive All-Star season in 2024. However, the team may still pursue another starter from a rebuilding franchise to boost their chances of making the playoffs in 2025. The Miami Marlins, currently not in contention, have already traded Tanner Scott and Luis Arráez. According to Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller, it’s predicted that the Marlins could trade Sandy Alcántara to the Red Sox before the 2025 trade deadline.

“The Miami Marlins were adamant from the outset that they had no intentions of trading away Sandy Alcántara this offseason, and they have thus far stuck by that,” wrote Miller. “However, we’re all kind of expecting it to happen before this summer’s trade deadline. They probably just outright told people they wouldn’t be trading him now because they didn’t feel like dealing with lowball offers for a recent Cy Young winner who is coming off an even more recent Tommy John surgery. “Instead, [they’re] hoping he can reassert his dominance over the first few months of the 2025 campaign and be worth more in July than he would’ve been in January.”

Sandy Alcántara signed a five-year, $56 million extension with the Miami Marlins in 2021, and he has two seasons remaining on his contract, along with a $21 million club option for 2027. Given his multiple years of control, he could bring a significant return of prospects for the Marlins once he regains his value. Alcántara missed the 2024 season due to recovery from Tommy John surgery. He won the National League Cy Young Award in 2022, but had a down year in 2023. Currently, his trade value is much lower than it could be once he returns to form. In 2022, he posted a 2.28 ERA and 207 strikeouts, leading the league with 228 2/3 innings pitched and six complete games. With a career ERA of 3.32, Alcántara could be the key player to push the Red Sox to a championship.
