The Boston Red Sox have been heavily connected to a major trade involving San Diego Padres ace Dylan Cease. However, the Padres are said to be demanding a significant return for their star pitcher, and understandably so.
If any team has the prospect depth to make this trade happen, it’s the Red Sox.
FanSided’s Cody Williams recently proposed that the Red Sox and Padres could complete a deal for Cease, but he speculated it might be larger than originally expected. Williams envisioned a trade that would send both Cease and Padres closer Robert Suarez to Boston in exchange for a substantial package of players.
Here’s the deal pitched by Williams:
Boston Red Sox receive: RHP Dylan Cease, RHP Robert Suarez
San Diego Padres receive: RHP Kutter Crawford, OF Wilyer Abreu, OF Miguel Bleis (No. 6 prospect), SS Dorian Soto (No. 30 prospect)

“More importantly, though, this trade would help the Padres continue AJ Preller’s mold of reshaping but still competing with Kutter Crawford and Wilyer Abreu,” Williams wrote. “Crawford isn’t Cease, obviously, but as a replacement with four years of cheap club control remaining but a solid baseline as a usable rotation option. Meanwhile, Abreu increases the outfield depth with Gold Glove defense in addition to a bat that’s proven against right-handed pitching and could have untapped upside overall at the dish.”
The Padres could be swayed by an offer that’s too good to pass up, but parting with both their ace and Robert Suarez would be a significant sacrifice.
For the Red Sox, acquiring Cease would dramatically improve their starting rotation, while also bringing in one of the league’s top relievers. Suarez was outstanding in 2024, and there’s every reason to believe he’ll continue to perform at a high level in 2025.
Boston also has the money to re-sign Cease at the end of the season. Spotrac predicts the righty to land a deal worth $108 million which is well within Boston’s price range.
This hypothetical deal may make enough sense to be plausible.
