The Detroit Red Wings are aiming to break their playoff slump, and one trade suggestion has them landing a star player in a blockbuster deal.
Using the PuckGM tool on PuckPedia, which allows users to create their own trade scenarios, one user proposed a trade that would send talented player to the Red Wings from the Carolina Hurricanes.
Red Wings acquire:
Mikko Rantanen
Hurricanes acquire:
J.T. Compher ($2.6 million retained)
Patrick Kane
2025 first-round pick
2026 first-round pick
The proposed trade would be a major one, with Detroit acquiring Mikko Rantanen from Carolina in exchange for two first-round picks and two NHL players. Although the Hurricanes recently acquired Rantanen, his name has resurfaced in trade rumors due to concerns over re-signing him before the March 7 trade deadline.
Rantanen, in the final year of his six-year, $55.5 million contract, would significantly strengthen Detroit’s lineup, likely slotting onto the top line to help end their playoff drought. So far this season, between the Hurricanes and the Colorado Avalanche, he’s tallied 26 goals and 40 assists for 66 points in 55 games.
In return, Detroit would offer their first-round picks for the next two years as the core of the trade, along with Compher, who’s in the second year of his five-year, $25.5 million deal. Compher, who has played 49 games this season with 6 goals and 15 assists for 21 points, could serve as a third-line center for Carolina.
Meanwhile, Kane, a future Hall of Famer, would add more offense to the Hurricanes’ roster. Kane, who signed a one-year, $4 million contract with Detroit, has played 45 games this season, contributing 12 goals and 19 assists for 31 points.
Red Wings Coach Focused on Improvements
Detroit is currently in a playoff position.
The Red Wings got off to a rough start, leading to the firing of Derek Lalonde and the hiring of Todd McLellan as his replacement. Since McLellan took over, Detroit has been on a strong run, with a 15-5-1 record. However, McLellan believes there’s still room for improvement.
“We can take some time to breathe,” McLellan said. “As a staff, we’ll review where we’ve been and what we need to work on. Some of the things we saw are important. Game-management skills are really hard to work on in practice because there is no score or fatigue and not a lot of line-matching. It’s hard to recreate stressful situations, so game-management skills just have to keep coming through video and experience. For us to move forward, those are going to have to improve.”
Detroit is 28-22-5 and holding onto the final Wild Card spot.
