Questionable Trade Move: Following their hasty acquisition of Juan Soto, the Mets are on the verge of making another costly mistake by not re-signing José Iglesias. Despite his strong 2024 season and…..

The Mets are likely heading into 2025 with a revamped roster, but they seem poised to part ways with one of their dependable infielders from last season, José Iglesias. The fan-favorite shortstop remains unsigned, and according to the team’s president of baseball operations, David Stearns, Iglesias is seeking a contract that the Mets are not willing to offer.

Iglesias, now 35, is looking for a multi-year deal, which is unusual for a player of his age. However, after a strong 2024 season where he hit .292/.345/.415 with eight home runs and 58 RBIs across 135 games, Iglesias has some leverage. His offensive performance, one of the best in his career, showcased his ability to make consistent contact while adding unexpected power.

Defensively, while once a steady shortstop, Iglesias has shown signs of decline, posting -2 defensive runs saved last season, which suggests he might be better suited for second base. With Jeff McNeil already playing second and young infielders vying for positions, the Mets seem content to move on.

With Francisco Lindor holding down shortstop and prospects like Luisangel Acuña, Brett Baty, and Ronny Mauricio in the mix, the Mets don’t have a pressing need for another infielder. Given their already high payroll, investing in a veteran like Iglesias on a multi-year deal doesn’t fit their strategy.

Iglesias, though, should find interest from other teams, especially contenders in need of infield depth and a reliable veteran presence. While he still holds value, it appears his time with the Mets is likely over.
