The Iowa Hawkeyes are having a disappointing 2024-25 college basketball season. Despite initial expectations of making the tournament, their chances of achieving that goal are virtually nonexistent.
Currently, Iowa has a 13-10 record. Their most notable victory came with an 85-60 win over the Indiana Hoosiers, but aside from that, they haven’t had any standout wins, and Indiana itself has had a rough season.
It was recently reported that standout forward Owen Freeman will be sidelined for the rest of the season due to an injury. Now, another player is also expected to be out for the remainder of the year.
According to Tyler Tachman of the Des Moines Register, head coach Fran McCaffery has confirmed that freshman forward Cooper Koch is likely to miss the rest of the season as well.

“I think that’s where we’re at,” McCaffery said. “But that’s kind of a long process. So I won’t get into the specifics of it. But I think it’s safe to say that his condition is such that he probably won’t be playing this year. And would probably look to pursue (a medical redshirt).”
No details have been released regarding the specific injury that could keep Koch out for the remainder of the season.
So far this year, Koch has appeared in just 10 games, averaging 4.6 points, 2.1 rebounds, and 0.8 assists. He shot 48.4 percent from the field and 42.9 percent from beyond the arc.
While his absence isn’t a major setback for this year’s team, as Koch didn’t have a significant role, averaging just 13.6 minutes per game, it does impact their overall depth.
Pursuing a medical redshirt would be a smart move for Koch, considering his potential, especially as a shooter, which could be valuable in the future.
Given the circumstances, it seems Koch is likely finished for the season, and the Hawkeyes will have to wait until next year to see what he can bring to the table.
