Washington State University’s football program, redshirt sophomore quarterback John Mateer has entered the transfer portal, as confirmed by head coach Jake Dickert on December 16, 2024. Mateer’s departure comes after a standout season where he led the Cougars to an eight-win record, their best since 2018.
Taking over as the starting quarterback in 2024, Mateer showcased his dual-threat capabilities by amassing 3,139 passing yards with 29 touchdowns and rushing for 827 yards, adding 15 touchdowns on the ground. His performance positioned him as one of the most sought-after players in the transfer portal. citeturn0search0
The Cougars had made substantial efforts to retain Mateer, presenting an NIL package in the $1 million range, which he ultimately declined. Coach Dickert expressed disappointment but acknowledged Mateer’s desire to play on a bigger stage as the primary reason for his decision. citeturn0search1
With Mateer’s departure, backup quarterback Zevi Eckhaus, a transfer from FCS Bryant, is expected to start in the upcoming Holiday Bowl against Syracuse on December 27. Eckhaus has been recognized for his leadership and positivity throughout the season, and the team is optimistic about his performance in the bowl game.
As the Cougars prepare for the Holiday Bowl, the focus shifts to Eckhaus and the rest of the team to step up and deliver a strong performance in Mateer’s absence.
