SMU’s ACC Dream Season Ends in Heartbreak—But They Still Made History
In 2024, the SMU Mustangs made a smooth transition from the American Athletic Conference (AAC) to the Atlantic Coast Conference (ACC), marking a historic year for the program. After winning the AAC with an 11-3 record in 2023, SMU reached the ACC Championship in their debut season. However, they suffered a heartbreaking loss to Clemson, who secured victory with a last-second field goal in Charlotte.
Despite the tough defeat, SMU’s impressive season earned them the final at-large bid in the first-ever 12-team College Football Playoff. The Mustangs embraced the national spotlight but saw their season end in the opening round with a 38-10 loss to Penn State in Happy Valley.
