The Toronto Blue Jays and three-time Cy Young Award winner agree to a one-year, US$15.5 million deal.
Last season, the 40-year-old only made nine starts for Texas and went 2-4 with a 3.95 ERA. After recovering from lower back surgery, he began the season on the injured list. He was placed on the IL from August 2 to September 13 due to shoulder fatigue. After September 14, he was unable to pitch due to an injury in his left hamstring.
He joins Chris Bassitt, José Berríos, and Kevin Gausman in the anticipated rotation. The Blue Jays also have Yariel Rodríguez, who inked a five-year, $32 million contract last February, and Bowden Francis, who just finished an outstanding rookie campaign.
After losing to Cleveland in the 2016 AL Championship Series, the Blue Jays haven’t won a postseason game and finished last in the AL East at 74-88. In 2020, 2022, and 2023, they were swept in the wild-card round.

In 466 games over 17 seasons, including 457 starts, Scherzer has a 3.16 ERA and a 216-112 record. In 2,878 innings, he has struck out 3,407 batters.
He is currently behind former colleague Justin Verlander in strikeouts, wins, and innings, ranking second among active pitchers.
To clear a roster spot, Toronto designated right-hander Michael Petersen for assignment.
