Massive blow: ‘This is sad’ WVU confirm more bad news

West Virginia will be without key man for the remainder of the 2024-25 season.

The Head coach  confirmed the absence of his son for the rest of his first season in Morgantown.

“Since early December, we have consulted with our team doctors and numerous medical professionals to evaluate and treat Tucker’s injury,” coach DeVries said. “Tucker did everything he could to get back on the court this season, but unfortunately it has been determined by all parties involved that surgery is necessary. He will be out of action for approximately three months.

“We will apply for a medical redshirt and certainly look forward for Tucker to come back healthy for his final year. As I’ve said before, we have a great bunch of guys in the locker room who have rallied around him during his absence. I have complete confidence in our team that they will continue to do so.”

DeVries started in the Mountaineers’ first eight games of the season, averaging 14.9 points and 4.9 rebounds. He scored in double figures six times, including a standout performance with 26 points and eight three-pointers that helped WVU secure an overtime win over Arizona at the Battle 4 Atlantis.

DeVries also contributed 15 points in a December 6 home win against Georgetown. However, he has missed the team’s last 13 games. With DeVries in the lineup, WVU posted a 6-2 record, including key wins over Gonzaga, Arizona, and Georgetown.

Two days before Darian DeVries was named WVU’s head coach in March 2024, Tucker DeVries had surgery on his right shoulder, which had been problematic for him during the previous two seasons at Drake.

Nearly four months post-surgery, DeVries was cleared for full contact.

A two-time Missouri Valley Conference Player of the Year at Drake, DeVries has averaged 17.7 points over 112 career college games and is just 14 points away from reaching 2,000 career points.
