Alex Bregman, a two-time American League All-Star, is one of the top remaining free agents in Major League Baseball. After spending his entire nine-year career with the Houston Astros, Bregman may be seeking a new team this offseason. Last season, he posted a .768 OPS over 145 games, hitting 26 home runs and driving in 75 RBIs. Over the course of his career, Bregman has an .848 OPS, ranking 20th among active players. A first-time Gold Glove winner in 2024, Bregman excels both defensively and offensively. As a two-time World Series champion, he’s been linked to several teams this offseason, with the Detroit Tigers and Boston Red Sox emerging as the favorites to sign him, according to Bob Nightengale of USA TODAY.
Following a report on January 27 by KPRC 2 Houston’s Ari Alexander that the Astros had not altered their six-year, $156 million offer to Alex Bregman, another report surfaced revealing Boston’s decision.
Despite Houston’s six-year offer to Bregman that reportedly remains unchanged, the Red Sox have decided to stand firm on just a four-year offer to the All-Star infielder (per Jen McCaffery of The Athletic).
“Part of the problem is Bregman is seeking a deal of six years or so,” McCaffery wrote. “The Red Sox reportedly were willing to go up to four years, which would allow them to shift some players around the diamond, but six years makes it tough.”
With the news that Houston hasn’t increased its offer to Bregman, the Red Sox have chosen to cap their offer at four years. This development keeps Detroit in the race, a team managed by Bregman’s former Astros coach, A.J. Hinch. In his January 31 article, Nightengale mentioned that while Bregman could receive a “lucrative contract” from Detroit, he would need to switch positions and play second base.
