The Toronto Blue Jays are starting to see a chance for improvement. Despite the struggles of their 2024 season, there’s undeniable talent on the roster. While transforming a 74-win team into a playoff contender is no easy task, it becomes more feasible when competing in the less competitive league.
With Vladimir Guerrero Jr. set to enter free agency next year, the Blue Jays are eager to make more moves, even after acquiring Anthony Santander. A potential addition? Max Scherzer, the three-time Cy Young winner, who might be a fit for Toronto as he enters his age-40 season.
Christopher Hennessy of ClutchPoints thinks Scherzer could be a strong match, recently listing the Blue Jays as one of the best destinations for Scherzer in the offseason.
“They traded Yusei Kikuchi at the deadline for prospects and haven’t replaced him. Scherzer could head to Toronto and help in their playoff push,” Hennessy said. “With only three 90-win teams in the American League last year, there’s room for a surprise team to break through. Scherzer could help the Blue Jays become that team.”
Although Scherzer dealt with injuries last season, starting just nine games and recording a 3.95 ERA over 44 2/3 innings, there’s still speculation about him transitioning to a closer role, which could suit Toronto, given their lack of a clear ninth-inning option.
Given his experience and competitive edge, Scherzer is bound to pitch somewhere next season. If Toronto can afford the projected $15 million it may take to sign him, why not consider him?
