Massive boost: Los Angeles Angels sign two-time All-Star

The Los Angeles Angels have unexpectedly been one of the most active teams this offseason.

After finishing last in the American League West with a 63-99 record, the Angels have been busy making moves this winter. They’ve added left-handed pitcher Yusei Kikuchi with a three-year, $63-million contract and former World Series champion Kyle Hendricks on a one-year, $2.5-million deal.

The Angels also signed catcher Travis d’Arnaud to a two-year, $16-million deal to back up Logan O’Hoppe. Additionally, they traded for power hitter Jorge Soler to strengthen their offense.

With a promising young core featuring O’Hoppe, shortstop Zach Neto, and first baseman Nolan Schanuel, the Angels are hopeful that future Hall of Famer Mike Trout will return to full health.

Now, Los Angeles is giving a two-time All-Star shortstop a chance to make the team in spring training.

MLB rumors: Angels have eye-opening Tim Anderson plan if they sign him in free agency

USA Today’s MLB insider Bob Nightengale reports the Angels have signed Tim Anderson to a minor league contract.

Anderson, who was the American League batting champion in 2019 and a two-time All-Star with the Chicago White Sox, has seen a significant decline in performance since the 2022 season.

The White Sox chose not to pick up his option after he posted a .245 average, .582 OPS, 62 OPS+, and just one home run in 2023. The Miami Marlins then signed him to a one-year, $5-million deal for 2024 in hopes of a rebound, but it didn’t materialize. Anderson played just 65 games, struggling to a .214/.237/.226 line, with a 27 OPS+ and no home runs.

At only 31 years old, Anderson could still compete for a spot with the Angels, particularly given Anthony Rendon’s injury concerns.

In his nine seasons, Anderson has a career .278 batting average, .718 OPS, 95 OPS+, and 98 home runs.
