David Montgomery is preparing to return to action just in time for the Detroit Lions’ first playoff game.
The running back has been sidelined since mid-December after sustaining a knee injury in Detroit’s loss to the Buffalo Bills. He missed the final three regular-season games but was able to avoid season-ending surgery, as reported by NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport following the injury.
Montgomery had expressed hope of being ready to play during the playoffs, and that goal appears to be within reach. He was listed as a full participant in practice on Tuesday, according to Lions reporter Dannie Rogers.
Last week, during Detroit’s first-round bye, head coach Dan Campbell expressed confidence that Montgomery would be ready to play in the divisional round. His return appears to be on track, as he participated in practice on Tuesday, although it was just a walkthrough.
Montgomery has accumulated 775 rushing yards and 12 touchdowns this season, forming a powerful duo with the Lions’ other star running back, speedster Jahmyr Gibbs.
Detroit will kick off their postseason campaign at home against the Washington Commanders on Saturday, January 18, at 8 p.m. ET. The Commanders are coming off a dramatic wild-card win, edging out the Tampa Bay Buccaneers with a last-second field goal.
Now, Washington will likely need to find a way to contain the Lions’ dynamic rushing pair, dubbed the “Sonic and Knuckles” duo.
