According to a social media post by NFL Network’s Tom Pelissero on Monday morning, Miami Dolphins quarterback is no longer on the team’s roster after his practice squad contract expired.
Now a free agent, Thompson is available to sign with any team, including those still in the NFL Playoffs.
Thompson lost his backup role following subpar performances and a “painful” rib injury during a Week 3 matchup against the Seattle Seahawks in the 2024 season. He had stepped in after starting quarterback Tua Tagovailoa sustained another concussion in Week 2 against the Buffalo Bills.
Thompson played in two games during the 2024 season, completing 21 of 33 passes for 187 yards and no touchdowns. He also rushed once for four yards and had two fumbles.
After Thompson’s injury, the Dolphins turned to former Baltimore Ravens practice squad quarterback Tyler Huntley as Tagovailoa’s primary backup. Following Huntley’s victory over the Cleveland Browns in Week 17, he hinted to Barry Jackson of the Miami Herald that the Dolphins might be interested in bringing him back for the 2025 season.
However, after a poor performance against the New York Jets in a crucial Week 18 game, Huntley’s future with the Dolphins is uncertain.
As the offseason begins, it remains to be seen whether Miami will bring back Thompson or Huntley.
