The New York Mets made a major move this offseason by securing Juan Soto, but they have yet to add another star to pair with him. One player the Mets have been closely linked to is first baseman Pete Alonso, who has spent six seasons with the team.
Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report recently that the Mets will re-sign Alonso this winter. Miller referenced a projection by Spotrac, which estimated Alonso’s deal at $174 million, although he suggested the final amount may be lower.
Currently, the Mets’ payroll is estimated at $259 million, down from about $330 million in the past two seasons. Miller noted that the Mets could still sign Alonso to a $30 million salary and not exceed their recent spending levels, even with Starling Marte’s $20.75 million contract still on the books. However, this could create tension, as Alonso may feel the Mets are trying to undercut his worth despite having the financial flexibility.
Although other teams that could compete for Alonso’s services have already added first basemen, the Mets remain the front-runners. The most likely outcome is that Alonso will re-sign with New York on a three- or four-year contract with a high average annual value.
