Virginia has made another move in the transfer portal. Another wide receiver announced his commitment to the UVA football team according to Matt Zenitz of CBS Sports and 247Sports. Ross, who has totaled nearly 1,800 receiving yards and close to 2,500 all-purpose yards during his time at UConn and JMU, joins the Cavaliers with one year of eligibility left.
A 5’10”, 181-pound wide receiver from Newark, Delaware, began his college career at UConn in 2019. That season, he earned Pro Football Focus Freshman All-American honorable mention honors after recording 60 catches for 723 yards and four touchdowns. However, he missed the 2020 season when UConn canceled its campaign due to COVID-19, a year in which the Huskies were set to play Virginia. Ross played in just five games over the next two seasons (2021-2022) before having a strong 2023, catching 44 passes for 552 yards and one touchdown.
After transferring to James Madison, Ross enjoyed a productive 2024 season, playing 13 games and starting nine. He recorded 37 receptions for 443 yards and three touchdowns, adding 56 yards on four rushing attempts. Ross also excelled as JMU’s primary kick returner, totaling 366 yards on 13 returns, including a 94-yard touchdown return against Southern Miss. His contributions earned him Third-Team All-Sun Belt honors as a return specialist.
Over the course of his career, Ross has accumulated 151 catches for 1,799 receiving yards, 8 touchdowns, 1,891 yards from scrimmage, and 2,462 all-purpose yards, showcasing his dynamic ability with the ball in hand.
Virginia’s receiver corps has seen significant turnover this offseason, with six wide receivers entering the transfer portal, including leading receiver Malachi Fields, who transferred to Notre Dame. Other departures include JR Wilson, Jaden Gibson, and Chris Tyree, who exhausted his eligibility as the team’s return specialist. With the return of Trell Harris, Suderian Harrison, Kameron Courtney, Andre Greene Jr., and Eli Wood, UVA was in search of another playmaker, especially one who could contribute as a return specialist. Ross fits that need perfectly.
Ross is the second player from James Madison to transfer to Virginia this offseason, following offensive lineman Tyshawn Wyatt. Along with quarterbacks Chandler Morris (North Texas) and Daniel Kaelin (Nebraska), wide receiver Jahmal Edrine (Purdue), running back J’Mari Taylor (NC Central), and offensive linemen Brady Wilson (UAB), Tyshawn Wyatt (JMU), Kevin Wigenton II (Illinois), and Monroe Mills (Louisville), Ross is part of Virginia’s effort to bolster its offensive depth, with a total of nine offensive transfers joining the team this offseason.
