The San Diego Padres have committed a significant amount of money to their star players, limiting their ability to add new talent this offseason. As a result, they may have to let some of their free agents go, though they are expected to make a strong effort to keep their key players. Recently, Ryan Finkelstein of Just Baseball made an unexpected prediction, suggesting that the Padres could lose out on outfielder, with the breakout star potentially signing with the San Francisco Giants. Finkelstein noted that Profar was an All-Star and posted a 4-win season while earning just $1 million on a one-year contract.
He also pointed out that Lourdes Gurriel Jr. signed a three-year, $42 million deal with the Arizona Diamondbacks despite not coming off an All-Star season, making it unlikely for Profar to receive a contract longer than three years. Up to this point, the assumption has been that Profar would return to the Padres after a successful stint with them last season. However, the possibility of Profar joining the Giants remains, especially after San Francisco lost outfielder Michael Conforto to the Los Angeles Dodgers, leaving a potential opening for Profar to fill.
