The Chicago White Sox have reportedly reached an agreement on a contract with Boston Red Sox baseman according to Chris Cotillo of masslive.com.
“Source claim he gets $1.25M in the majors with the White Sox. $500K in incentives. Opt-out clauses in June and July. It’s a minor league deal,” Cotillo wrote on X, formerly Twitter.
A powerful left-handed hitter, has shown flashes of potential at the major league level. In 2021, he hit 25 home runs in 133 games, showcasing his power. However, he has been unable to replicate that performance in subsequent seasons, and at 29 years old, the Red Sox appear ready to move in a different direction.
He struggled in 2024, appearing in 37 games and posting a disappointing slash line of .133/.217/.193/.410. He hit just one home run during that stretch. As a result, the Red Sox designated Dalbec for assignment in September, and he was sent to Triple-A after clearing waivers.
For the White Sox, this acquisition is a low-risk, high-reward move. Dalbec has the potential to hit 30 home runs if he reaches his peak form. However, if he continues to struggle, Chicago can easily part ways without significant repercussions, given the minor league contract. If Dalbec makes the major league roster, he will reportedly earn $1.25 million.
Coming off a historically poor 2024 season, the White Sox are in the midst of a crucial rebuild. While they’re not close to competing for a championship yet, a successful roster overhaul could see them playing competitive baseball in the coming years.
There is a possibility that Dalbec could become part of Chicago’s long-term plans if he performs well. Alternatively, he may opt to test free agency again if he has a strong 2025 season with the White Sox.
