Free agent third baseman is currently the top position player available on the market. Although a return to the Houston Astros is still technically possible, it seems unlikely. This might present a prime opportunity for a team like the Boston Red Sox to sign him to a lucrative deal. The Astros have already made preparations for life without him by acquiring third baseman Isaac Paredes and signing first baseman Christian Walker. The Red Sox have been connected to the two-time All-Star for several reasons. He would provide a right-handed bat, which the team has sought all winter. At 30 years old, he could play second base, or even take over third base, allowing Rafael Devers to shift to first. More significantly, he offers substantial postseason experience, having won two World Series championships. The Athletic’s Jim Bowden predicts that the nine-year veteran is likely to make Fenway Park his new home.
“That said, Boston is my favorite spot for Bregman, who will turn 31 in March. They need a right-handed power pull hitter, and he would do significant damage to the Green Monster in left field,” Bowden wrote. “They could move Rafael Devers to first base and put Triston Casas at DH or they could just put Bregman at second base full-time. His leadership and ability to grind at-bats would help this young roster. He could be the final piece in getting the Red Sox back to the postseason.”
Bregman may be seeking a team willing to offer him $200 million before finalizing a contract. At the start of the offseason, The Athletic’s Tim Britton estimated a seven-year, $189 million deal for the third baseman.
