West Virginia’s head football coach, Rich Rodriguez, is making significant strides in assembling his coaching staff, with a new addition on the defensive side of the ball. Rodriguez has decided to hire Rod West as the team’s cornerbacks coach, according to ESPN’s Pete Thamel, who was the first to report the news.
The announcement of West’s hiring was unintentionally revealed on Friday night when WVU transfer portal prospect Devonte Golden-Nelson, a cornerback from Akron, tagged West in a tweet sharing that he had received an offer.
Recently named to the AFCA’s list of 35 best coaches under 35, West spent the last four seasons at Appalachian State as the cornerbacks coach and pass game coordinator. During his tenure, he helped lead the Mountaineers to two Sun Belt titles and an impressive victory over No. 6 Texas A&M in 2022. Prior to his time at App State, West was the co-defensive coordinator and cornerbacks coach at Richmond.
