Missouri men’s basketball head coach Dennis Gates offered high praise for Auburn senior forward Johni Broome ahead of their matchup with Auburn on Saturday.
During the pre-game show on the Missouri basketball radio broadcast, Gates spoke with Mike Kelly, the play-by-play voice of the Tiger Radio Network.
Gates remarked, “I believe the Naismith Player of the Year award should go to Johni Broome right now.”
The Naismith Men’s College Player of the Year Award recognizes the top men’s college basketball player in the country.
Broome entered the game against Missouri with impressive stats, averaging 18.2 points, 11.5 rebounds, 3.4 assists, and 2.6 blocked shots per game over the first 13 games of the season.
For the 2023-24 season, Broome earned Third Team All-American honors from The Associated Press and the United States Basketball Writers Association.
Auburn came into the game with a 12-1 record and ranked No. 2 in The Associated Press poll.
When Kelly asked Gates what stood out about Auburn’s roster, Gates said, “They have a lot of depth. When you look at their athleticism, structure, experience, and in-game adjustments, they are very impressive.”
Missouri entered the game with an 11-2 record, and Gates outlined the key to success against Auburn. “Ultimately, we need to inbound the ball, take care of it, and play unselfishly while maintaining the pace,” Gates said.
