As if Oregon fans weren’t already reeling from their team’s blowout loss in the Rose Bowl, they received more tough news this Friday involving one of the top recruits from the 2025 class.
According to Brandon Huffman of 247Sports, Oregon quarterback Jaron-Keawe Sagapolutele is expected to enter the NCAA transfer portal. While Sagapolutele has yet to confirm this, if true, it would be a major blow for the Ducks, who had high hopes he would develop into their starting quarterback.
Sagapolutele enrolled at Oregon in December after initially committing to Cal before switching to Oregon. Now, he could be on the verge of choosing his third school in under a year.
Per 247Sports: “Players participating in bowls after December 28th have five days after their final game to enter the portal, so Sagapolutele has until the weekend, but is expected to enter before then.”
As one of the top passers in his class, Sagapolutele will likely have multiple programs vying for him once he enters the portal. Ranked as the No. 8 quarterback and No. 106 overall recruit in the 2025 class by 247Sports, his departure would leave Oregon searching for a new quarterback, especially with Dillon Gabriel set to move on.
It’s unclear whether the Rose Bowl result influenced Sagapolutele’s decision, or if factors like NIL deals played a role.
Despite this setback, Oregon still has much to be proud of after finishing 13-1 in its inaugural Big Ten season. However, retaining talents like Sagapolutele will be key for the Ducks to remain in the hunt for a national title.
