Important Update: Red Sox Reportedly Poised To Land Five-Time Silver Slugger in $260 Million Massive Deal After Losing Out on Bregman

The St. Louis Cardinals appear to be headed for a rebuild, and trading one of their top players could be imminent. The Boston Red Sox are emerging as a potential destination for one of their All-Stars.

Nolan Arenado is likely to be traded this offseason as the Cardinals look to acquire young talent. Sports Illustrated’s Patrick McAvoy speculated that the Cardinals might trade Arenado to the Red Sox.

“The Cardinals and Red Sox worked out a deal last year involving Tyler O’Neill. [Chaim] Bloom is familiar with Boston’s farm system after helping to build it up. Arenado probably won’t be traded until the Alex Bregman sweepstakes are over,” McAvoy wrote. “Boston is in the running for Bregman, but if they don’t land him, they could revisit trade talks for Arenado.”

Arenado is one of six teams to which he would waive his no-trade clause. In 2019, he signed an eight-year, $260 million contract with the Colorado Rockies before being traded to the Cardinals. The Cardinals would likely need to absorb part of his contract to facilitate a trade.

While losing Arenado would be a blow to the Cardinals’ offense, the return they receive for him could set them up for the future. Arenado hit .272 with 16 home runs last season for St. Louis.

Arenado, an eight-time All-Star, five-time Silver Slugger, 10-time Gold Glover, and six-time Platinum Glover, would be a valuable addition to the Red Sox, who missed out on Juan Soto earlier this offseason.
