The Houston Astros have made significant moves this offseason to strengthen their roster and maintain their dominance in the American League West.
One of the most notable moves was the signing of Christian Walker, one of the top free agent first basemen, to a three-year, $60 million contract. Additionally, the Astros traded right fielder Kyle Tucker to the Chicago Cubs, a move that’s looking increasingly favorable as Tucker may not re-sign with the Cubs in the offseason.
Adding to the offseason buzz, there are rumors that Houston might pursue Anthony Santander as a potential replacement. With all these changes, the Astros’ future looks promising.
However, could the Astros make a move that surprises both MLB and its fanbase?
According to Pete Caldera of NorthJersey.com, there’s speculation that the Astros might re-sign two-time All-Star Alex Bregman to a huge $175 million deal, potentially keeping the third baseman in Houston for the remainder of his career.
“Before a March 1 exhibition game against Houston at Steinbrenner Field, word circulates that third baseman Alex Bregman has re-signed with the Astros on a $175 million deal,” Caldera wrote in his prediction.
It’s important to note that while this deal might seem favorable to Houston, it’s not exactly what Bregman is likely seeking. The Astros are known for offering free agent contracts shorter than six years to get maximum value, and Bregman’s market has been weak. After their unsuccessful pursuit of St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado, the Astros might turn back to Bregman to fill the gap at third base.
Bregman could also be looking for stability this winter, and a return to Houston, a team with championship aspirations, could be an ideal situation for him and his family.
While a reunion is not guaranteed, if Bregman is still available when March rolls around, the situation could take an unexpected turn.
