Penn State has already received confirmation from quarterback Drew Allar that he plans to return for his senior season in 2025, but what about the other two offensive stars from James Franklin’s talented 2022 recruiting class?
Nicholas Singleton and Kaytron Allen have formed a standout running back duo since their freshman year, recently leading the Nittany Lions to a commanding 31-14 victory over Boise State in the Fiesta Bowl College Football Playoff quarterfinal. Both players are eligible for the draft and would likely be in high demand in a stacked running back class. However, two days later, as Penn State awaits its opponent for the Orange Bowl CFP semifinal, ESPN’s Pat McAfee claimed that the pair, nicknamed the “Lawn Boyz,” are also returning.
While this news might excite fans, it’s important to note that neither player has officially announced their decision, and there has been no substantial reporting on the matter. Additionally, McAfee’s reliability on this topic is questionable. Earlier this season, he incorrectly stated that Penn State allegedly could not host a home College Football Playoff game at Beaver Stadium due to a shortage of hotels in the State College area. Penn State went on to host SMU in the first round, winning 38-10 to set up their Fiesta Bowl showdown.
There is some belief that at least one of the running backs, likely Allen, could return for 2025. Allen was rated lower coming out of high school and has received less NFL draft buzz. Still, it seems unlikely that both backs will return for their senior seasons. If they do, along with Allar, Penn State could emerge as Big Ten favorites.
