The Blue Jays are aware of the salary they would need to offer Vladimir Guerrero Jr. to keep him in Toronto, but since they haven’t made such an offer yet, it appears a trade is more likely.
According to MLB reporter Jim Riley, there’s a potential trade between the Blue Jays and the Cubs that could send Guerrero to Chicago in exchange for Kevin Alcantara, Cole Mathis, and Javier Assad.
Riley’s proposal suggests the Cubs would trade outfielder Kevin Alcantara, pitcher Cole Mathis, and starter Javier Assad to the Blue Jays for Guerrero. Alcantara, ranked the 76th best prospect in baseball, is seen as the key asset in the deal. Assad, likely to join the Blue Jays’ rotation immediately, and Mathis, ranked as the Cubs’ 12th best prospect, would also be part of the trade. Riley emphasizes that while Guerrero is an established star, the Blue Jays would receive valuable prospects in return, including an outfielder, a potential starter, and a strong pitching prospect.
While the return package doesn’t match Guerrero’s star power, the Blue Jays would still gain solid assets in exchange for what could be a one-year rental for the Cubs in 2025. Although it would be tough for Toronto fans to see Guerrero go, a trade now seems more likely than keeping him.
