Major Move: Mets Close to Reaching Agreement with Homegrown Superstar for Massive $140 Million Deal

The New York Mets made a major splash this free agency by securing Juan Soto, but they still face the task of retaining their own superstar, Pete Alonso. According to Ryan Finkelstein of Just Baseball, the Mets are expected to re-sign Alonso to a six-year, $140 million deal.

While Alonso remains one of the top free agents alongside Alex Bregman, the Mets have yet to find a replacement at first base, and with many teams filling their own needs at the position, Alonso’s chances of returning to New York have grown. Recent moves, such as the Yankees signing Paul Goldschmidt and the Astros acquiring Christian Walker, have limited the pool of suitors for Alonso, making the Mets the frontrunner to bring him back.

Though the Mets have the financial backing of owner Steve Cohen, the massive $765 million contract given to Soto may play a role in limiting their ability to make further moves. Despite that, Finkelstein believes the Mets will manage to secure Alonso’s return for the 2025 season.
