The New York Mets are currently the frontrunners to sign free-agent baseman this offseason. According to Jon Heyman of the New York Post, he is expected to secure a $152 million contract. However, what if he ends up signing with another team? What other franchises could potentially steal the star slugger away from New York? After Mike Puma of the New York Post named several other teams interested in him, FanSided’s Zachary Rotman ranked them based on their likelihood of pursuing and securing the first baseman. The Los Angeles Angels also appeared on the list as a possible contender, though Rotman doesn’t consider them the most probable choice.
“They might trick themselves into signing Alonso with the thought that they’d be good enough to compete, but would Alonso seriously consider them? Money matters, and if the Angels offer him way more than any other team then of course he’d consider them,” Rotman wrote. “However, there’s no reason why Alonso would consider the Angels’ money aside, and are we even sure that the Angels want Alonso?”
The Angels are probably not a serious contender for Pete Alonso. For them to sign the star slugger, Los Angeles would likely need to offer a significantly higher-than-expected contract. The Mets are expected to offer Alonso a deal in the range of $140 million to $160 million, or possibly even less. If the Angels were to approach a $200 million offer, there’s a chance Alonso could head to Los Angeles. However, this scenario seems highly unlikely.
