The Boston Red Sox have already made two major moves to strengthen their starting rotation, bringing in Garrett Crochet and Walker Buehler. However, there is speculation that they may not be finished yet.
While it would be a huge surprise for the Red Sox to target top pitchers like Corbin Burnes or Jack Flaherty, the situation with 23-year-old Japanese sensation Rōki Sasaki could be different.
Sasaki, a right-handed pitcher from the Chiba Lotte Marines, is viewed as one of the most promising young arms in the game and could be a potential No. 1 starter by 2025. Due to his age and the fact that he can only be signed through a team’s international bonus pool funds, he may not command as much on the open market.
At this stage, it’s not likely that the Red Sox will land Sasaki, as they haven’t yet met with him, although they remain open to the idea. According to Alex Speier of the Boston Globe, the Red Sox are waiting to see if they’ll be given the opportunity to meet with Sasaki. Red Sox chief baseball officer Craig Breslow expressed interest in participating in the process but confirmed that no meeting has been scheduled yet.
While the rotation has already been improved with Crochet and Buehler, adding a talent like Sasaki would be a game-changer for the Red Sox. If they are given the opportunity, it would be wise for them to try to meet with him, as he could become the ace of their staff.
