The All-star has decided to step away from baseball after an 11-year MLB career, as he revealed in an interview with AJ Cassavell of MLB.com.
The San Diego Padres first baseman and outfielder clarified that he doesn’t intend to “officially” retire but made this decision in June 2023, following his release by the Cincinnati Reds. At that time, Myers was also dealing with shoulder issues, which influenced his choice.
“I had a great career,” Myers reflected. “I loved what I did. I made a lot of great friends. I have no regrets. If you had told me when I was drafted that this would be my career, I would’ve taken it without hesitation. I loved it, and now I’m moving on to the next chapter of my life.”
Recently celebrating his 34th birthday, Myers is leaving baseball after playing 1,100 career games from 2013 to 2023 with the Tampa Bay Rays, Padres, and Reds. Throughout his 11 seasons in the majors, he posted a .252/.326/.437 batting line with 156 home runs in 4,290 plate appearances, earning a 107 wRC+.
Myers spent eight seasons with the Padres, where he hit 134 home runs, earned an All-Star Game start, and received down-ballot MVP consideration. Most notably, he was a key figure during the Padres’ remarkable transformation as a franchise.
His final MLB season was with the Reds in 2023. While he didn’t return to San Diego, he plans to visit Petco Park in the future.
Now back home in Charlotte, N.C., Myers lives with his wife, Maggie, and their 8-month-old son, Miller. He mentioned he hopes to stay involved in baseball in some capacity later on, although he’s unsure what that will look like.
For now, Myers is enjoying his own version of retirement. Before the interview, he proudly shared that he had just finished his 250th round of golf in 2024.
“I’m not looking for a boss right now,” Myers said. “I enjoy waking up, playing golf in the morning, and being a dad in the afternoon. I’ve got a great routine right now.”
