Deal imminent: Cardinals-Phillies To Swap Third Basemen in Blockbuster Trade

The St. Louis Cardinals are still searching for a team willing to take on Nolan Arenado’s contract, including the $52 million he still owes. As other teams begin to make moves, the market is becoming increasingly difficult to navigate. However, one potential option for the Cardinals could be the Philadelphia Phillies. There have been rumors that the Phillies have been discussing Alec Bohm with other teams, though they are not actively shopping him at this point. Still, Kerry Miller of Bleacher Report suggested that a trade involving a swap of third basemen between the Cardinals and Phillies could be a possibility.

“One of the six teams on Arenado’s initial list of preferred landing spots was the Philadelphia Phillies,” wrote Miller. “For that to make sense, though, the Phillies trading away Bohm is a must, perhaps even in the same deal for a rare three-team swap.

Miller’s predicted trade would be in fact a three-team deal. “The Trade: St. Louis sends 3B Nolan Arenado to Philadelphia; Philadelphia sends 3B Alec Bohm to Seattle; Seattle sends SS Colt Emerson (Joel Reuter’s No. 35 overall prospect) to St. Louis,” wrote Miller.

This trade seems like a win for all parties involved. The Phillies would strengthen their third base position, boosting their chances as a contender. The Cardinals would offload Nolan Arenado’s contract, freeing up payroll space, while the Seattle Mariners would gain much-needed offensive power. If the deal happens, it could mark the beginning of a rebuild for the Cardinals. However, they would still have a solid third baseman to potentially build around moving forward.
