The Philadelphia Phillies are continuing to strengthen their pitching staff following their major trade for starting pitcher
On Sunday, the Phillies acquired the 27-year-old left-hander from the Miami Marlins in exchange for prospects Starlyn Caba and Emaarion Boyd. This trade gives the Phillies a well-rounded rotation with five promising starters.
However, in today’s MLB, it’s difficult to ensure that a full rotation will remain healthy throughout the season. To address this, the Phillies bolstered their depth with another acquisition on Monday.
Matt Gelb of The Athletic reported that the Phillies have reached a one-year agreement with right-handed pitcher Joe Ross, a seven-year MLB veteran. Ross, who pitched for the Milwaukee Brewers in both starting and relief roles in 2024, is expected to serve as a “swingman,” according to Gelb.
The 31-year-old Ross made his return to the majors last season after spending 2022 and 2023 in the minors. He posted a 3.77 ERA in 25 appearances, covering 74 innings.
Ross’ bullpen numbers were particularly impressive, as he recorded a 1.67 ERA in 15 relief outings compared to a 4.98 ERA in 10 starts. He also improved after the All-Star break, finishing with a 2.81 ERA in the second half.
Overall, Ross holds a 4.19 ERA in 123 MLB appearances. His best season came in 2016 with the Washington Nationals, where he posted a 3.43 ERA and 2.0 bWAR in 19 starts.
A one-year deal is a smart move for any pitcher with upside, and Ross clearly has potential. His ability to excel in multiple roles gives the Phillies valuable flexibility, making him a key asset to their pitching staff.
