On Monday, linebacker announced his commitment to South Carolina after entering the transfer portal, according to On3’s Pete Nakos. A Virginia native, th linebacker previously played for both Alabama and Florida State over three years. The highly-ranked 4-star linebacker brings valuable experience along with considerable potential, despite not securing a consistent role on the field. Injuries limited his 2024 season at Florida State, where he recorded 12 tackles in four games as a reserve.

Murphy was ranked as the No. 65 prospect in the nation and the No. 2 player in Virginia in the class of 2022 by On3. At 6’2” and 230 pounds, he is a versatile linebacker capable of covering a lot of ground, fitting the profile of players that South Carolina defensive coordinator Clayton White has favored. Murphy’s addition follows a commitment from linebacker Andrew Jones, who later flipped to Ole Miss. In the Gamecocks’ linebacker group, Murphy will compete for playing time with rising sophomore Fred “JayR” Johnson, former walk-on Ronnie Porter, redshirt junior Jaron Willis, and a group of incoming freshmen. South Carolina will lose three seniors to graduation after the Citrus Bowl.

Thanks to a redshirt year, Murphy has two more seasons of eligibility remaining. Depending on his participation this fall, he may qualify for a medical redshirt for 2024, potentially extending his eligibility to three more years. Murphy joins other transfer portal additions for South Carolina, including offensive lineman Nick Sharpe, EDGE Jaylen Brown, tight end Jordan Dingle, and defensive tackle Gabriel Brownlow-Dindy.
