Indiana has significant rushing production to replace, and Maryland transfer Running Back will play a key role in that effort.
A 6-foot-2, 208-pound running back, has signed with Indiana, as first reported by ESPN’s Pete Thamel on Monday. He spent the past four seasons at Maryland and joins the Hoosiers with one year of eligibility remaining.
Indiana’s top two rushers from the 2024 season, Justice Ellison and Ty Son Lawton, have exhausted their eligibility. Backup Elijah Green also entered the transfer portal before the College Football Playoff, leaving Indiana to replace a combined 1,717 rushing yards and 27 touchdowns.
In addition to Hemby, Indiana has added UAB transfer Lee Beebe Jr., who rushed for 885 yards in 2024. Along with returning Hoosier Kaelon Black, who had 251 rushing yards last season, Hemby and Beebe are expected to be the top running backs for Indiana in 2025.
Hemby will be a welcome addition to Indiana, especially after years of facing him as an opponent at Maryland. In 2024, he rushed 134 times for 607 yards and six touchdowns, and caught 40 passes for 273 yards and a touchdown. In a 42-28 loss to Indiana, Hemby totaled 165 all-purpose yards and two touchdowns.
During the 2023 season, Hemby rushed 142 times for 680 yards and four touchdowns, while adding 38 catches for 349 yards and three touchdowns. His career-high in rushing yards came in 2022, when he ran for 989 yards and 10 touchdowns on 188 attempts, while also catching 298 receiving yards and a touchdown.
Hemby’s proven production aligns with Indiana coach Curt Cignetti’s approach of targeting transfer portal players with established records over raw potential. With 42 games of experience, 481 carries, 2,347 rushing yards, and 22 touchdowns, Hemby brings a wealth of experience to the Hoosiers.
