After a day of no transfer activity, the Virginia Cavaliers have made a splash in the portal, with Alabama defensive lineman reportedly set to join the team in Charlottesville. The news of his commitment was first reported by CBS Sports’ Matt Zenitz.
The 6-foot-4, 260-pound talented player, a native of Alabama, was ranked as the 21st-best defensive lineman in the nation when he graduated high school in 2023. A four-star prospect, he received multiple SEC offers and was praised for his impressive athleticism, particularly as an edge rusher with the potential to contribute as an interior rusher as well.
After redshirting his freshman year, he played in three games for Alabama this past season, primarily in blowout wins against Mercer, Missouri, and Wisconsin. During those appearances, he registered three tackles and one pass deflection. Despite his talent, he found himself behind a deep and talented Alabama defensive line, prompting his decision to transfer to Virginia, where he will have the opportunity to play immediately.
With three years of eligibility left, he has the potential to be a key piece for Virginia’s pass rush, which has been a weakness for defensive coordinator John Rudzinski’s unit over the past two seasons. Osborne becomes the third transfer defensive lineman to join the Cavaliers, following Elon defensive end Cazeem Moore and Fresno State defensive tackle Jacob Holmes.
Head coach Tony Elliott and his staff have been active in the 2024 transfer portal, and it appears their efforts are far from over. They still have needs on the offensive line and have several visits scheduled to address that area.
Whoever handed this staff access to the Power 5 transfer portal is likely going to regret it. With ample NIL resources and brand-new facilities, Tony Elliott is clearly becoming a formidable force in the recruitment game.
