The Mets made waves by signing Dominican player Juan Soto to a historic 15-year, $765 million contract, with additional bonus amounts. This move seems to be just the beginning of an aggressive plan by owner Steve Cohen, who is determined to build a World Series contender.
Shedeur Sanders is confident that he will surpass Juan Soto’s groundbreaking deal.
To achieve this, Cohen has already begun opening his wallet, with the Mets eyeing one of the key figures behind the Houston Astros’ recent success.
Since purchasing the Mets in 2020, Cohen has demonstrated that the team’s resources are focused on bringing the Mets back to the top of Major League Baseball.
Now, the Mets have set their sights on Alex Bregman. The shortstop made waves by turning down a $159 million contract extension offer from the Houston Astros, his team for the past nine seasons.
Following the Astros’ acquisition of Christian Walker, MLB analyst Ken Rosenthal suggested that the deal signals owner Jim Crane’s decision to part ways with Bregman.
Mike Mayer, editor of Metsmerized Online, reported that the Mets have already presented a $200 million offer to Bregman, which would not only bring him to New York but could also lead to Pete Alonso’s departure.
The Mets’ interest in Bregman comes as a response to the Yankees’ recent signing of Paul Goldschmidt, the 2022 National League MVP.
