The San Francisco Giants were said to be among the teams most interested in signing first baseman Paul Goldschmidt this offseason. However, on Saturday afternoon, Goldschmidt reached a one-year, $12.5 million agreement with the New York Yankees. How will the Giants react to missing out on Goldschmidt? FanSided’s Zachary Rotman recently proposed that the Giants might turn their attention to New York Mets slugger in free agency as a potential alternative.
“The Mets still loom as a fit, but why can’t the Giants take advantage of a clearly depleted market? Alonso is probably looking for a massive deal, but considering the lack of realistic suitors for his services, he won’t get that absurd payday,” Rotman wrote. “If the Giants can sign him to a similar kind of deal that they signed Blake Snell and Matt Chapman to last offseason, Alonso makes a whole lot of sense. “He’d add another big bat to this lineup and make the Giants legitimate Wild Card threats while also opening the door for him to cash in next offseason (like Snell) or even sign long-term with San Francisco (like Chapman).”
The possibility of the Giants pursuing Pete Alonso will probably hinge on the outcome of Corbin Burnes’ free agency. Currently, the Giants are considered the front-runners to sign Burnes, which would likely make it financially difficult for them to also acquire Alonso. However, if San Francisco misses out on Burnes, they’ll need to allocate their budget elsewhere, and bringing in a consistent 40-home run hitter like Alonso would be an excellent way to strengthen the team.
