According to a report from the recruiting site On3.com, South Carolina transfer wide receiverhas committed to Syracuse football.
He did not play for the Gamecocks this season but recorded five receptions for 81 yards as a true freshman in 2023. He originally joined South Carolina as a three-star recruit in the Class of 2023.
With three years of eligibility remaining, he becomes the sixth player to either sign with Syracuse or be reported as signing with the team this offseason. Meanwhile, Syracuse has seen nine players transfer out or enter the transfer portal.
He attended Bishop McDevitt High School in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, where he was ranked as the No. 25 prospect in the state by the 247 Sports composite rankings and the No. 1,077 recruit nationally. He also received offers from Virginia Tech and Central Michigan during his high school recruitment.
After entering the transfer portal, Russell reportedly received offers from Akron and UMass, according to his social media.
His South Carolina bio highlights his impressive speed, with the potential to contribute on special teams as well as at wide receiver. Interestingly, he didn’t play wide receiver in high school until his senior season, having primarily played defensive back before then.
Looking ahead to next season, Syracuse’s wide receiver group will be led by slot receiver Trebor Pena, with the team likely aiming to identify two reliable options for the outside spots during training camp. Several players, including Yazeed Haynes, Darrell Gill, Umari Hatcher, Justus Ross-Simmons, and Emanuel Ross, have shown flashes of strong play.
Russell is the second wide receiver Syracuse has added through the transfer portal this offseason, joining Rutgers transfer Chris Long.
