The transfer portal officially opened on December 9, and nearly two weeks later, many players seeking new programs are finalizing their decisions.
This portal has proven to be an invaluable resource for teams aiming to recruit experienced players who can make an immediate impact.
In this case, the Baylor Bears are adding a significant player in linebacker Travion Barnes, who was recognized as one of the top players in his conference.
Barnes, who spent the past year with the FIU Panthers, was named the CUSA Defensive Player of the Year.
His DPOY honor is well-deserved, considering his impressive statistics: 129 tackles, 11 tackles for loss, 2 interceptions (including a pick-six), 3 sacks, and 1 forced fumble.
2024 marked his first year at the Division 1 level, though Barnes previously played two seasons at Georgia Military, a junior college, from 2022 to 2023. Over 16 games in those two years, he posted 147 tackles, 7 sacks, 19 tackles for loss, 3 forced fumbles, and 2 interceptions.
Barnes still has two years of eligibility left and will have the opportunity to strengthen Baylor’s defense, which allowed 25.3 points per game in 2024.
