Astros To Steal $152 Million All-Star From Mets In Shocking Move

New York Mets first baseman faces a significant decision this winter as he enters free agency. While the Mets are reportedly working to re-sign him, the New York Yankees and Washington Nationals are also seen as potential suitors. However, one expert has suggested that the Houston Astros could emerge as a surprise contender for first baseman services. Leo Morgenstern of MLB Trade Rumors recently pointed out that the Astros might aggressively pursue the slugger after missing out on St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado. Morgenstern listed Houston as a “likely suitor” to trade for the talented player, noting that the team has been in need of a new first baseman since releasing José Abreu earlier this year. While the Astros have shown interest in Christian Walker, Alonso could become a more attractive option, especially if third baseman Alex Bregman signs elsewhere.

“The Astros reportedly offered Bregman a six-year, $156MM deal earlier this winter. It’s no surprise Bregman turned that number down, but it would probably be enough to land Alonso. That’s not to say the Astros would be willing to spend the same amount for Alonso as they would for Bregman, but at least it suggests that GM Dana Brown has the necessary funds to get a deal done.”

It’s clear that Houston is in need of a corner infielder. With recent trade acquisition Isaac Paredes capable of playing either corner spot, the Astros’ focus on adding a corner infielder is flexible. While re-signing Alex Bregman may be a long shot, the team could offer Pete Alonso a similar contract and have a strong chance of securing his services. Bringing in the power-hitting first baseman would be a major acquisition in what has already been a tumultuous offseason for Houston.
