Mets-Red Sox are in grueling bidding war to land Astros $170 million star player

Boston Red Sox, and New York Mets are familiar with intense free-agent bidding battles against each other. These teams were among the top contenders in the Juan Soto sweepstakes, which ended with Soto choosing the Mets. Now, they are reportedly involved in another bidding war, this time with the Houston Astros and Detroit Tigers also in the mix. Astros infielder  is set to become a free agent, and Jon Heyman of the New York Post anticipates he will sign a $170 million deal this offseason. MLB.com’s Mark Feinsand recently reported that these two teams are all serious contenders for the star player.

Clubs interested in him to varying degrees include the Red Sox, Mets, Tigers, and Blue Jays,” Feinsand wrote.

How Alex Bregman could fit into Yankees' plans

The Bregman sweepstakes is shaping up to be an interesting one to predict. Any of the teams in the mix could afford to meet his asking price of $170 million to $200 million; it will come down to which teams believe he’s truly worth that investment. The Mets, Astros, and Red Sox are also in the hunt for St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado, who would be a more affordable and less risky option than Bregman. For the Yankees, however, Bregman appears to be the top choice for the hot corner. The Bronx Bombers should be considered the favorites to sign Bregman this winter—a move that would have been unexpected just a few seasons ago.
