The San Francisco Giants are in need of a rotation upgrade following the departure of two-time Cy Young winner Blake Snell, who signed with their National League West rivals, the Los Angeles Dodgers. However, with the Giants now under the leadership of Buster Posey as president of baseball operations, they are entering a new era. Posey, a 12-year veteran and future Hall of Fame catcher for the team, is focused on securing a ninth World Series title for San Francisco, and adding this winter’s top pitcher could be his next move.
“The Giants and (Toronto) Blue Jays are among a half-dozen teams showing significant interest in star right-hander and new Giants baseball president Buster Posey met with the star player’s agent, Scott Boras,” New York Post’s Jon Heyman reported on Wednesday.
The talented player has compiled a 60-36 record with a 3.19 ERA, a 4.1-to-1 strikeout-to-walk ratio, a .212 batting average against, and a 1.06 WHIP over his seven-year career, during which he has played for the Milwaukee Brewers and Baltimore Orioles.
“Both these teams put in outstanding efforts to sign big-time players, and while both have experienced some struggles in that area, it’s possible the Giants could hold an allure for Burnes, a California native who’s spent his career in Milwaukee and Baltimore,” Heyman continued. “Posey, as a future Hall of Fame Giant, is likely a good person to sell San Francisco.”
Although the Giants have a true ace in right-handed pitcher Logan Webb, they could benefit from adding another top-tier starter, especially after last season’s rotation ranked 18th with a 4.22 ERA. Acquiring Burnes would come at a steep price, with his projected market value estimated at around $200 million for a seven-year deal, according to MLB Trade Rumors. Even after recently committing $182 million to superstar shortstop Willy Adames, the Giants are prepared to make a significant investment, and securing Burnes could be their next move.
