St. Louis Cardinals third baseman Nolan Arenado has expressed a desire to be traded to a playoff-contending team. While no trade has occurred yet, the Cardinals are preparing for the future without him at third base.
After three seasons with the St. Louis Cardinals, superstar Nolan Arenado has grown frustrated with the team’s lack of success. He has made it clear that he would prefer to play for a contending team, even offering to switch positions if necessary to facilitate the move.
Earlier this week, it was revealed that Arenado is willing to waive his no-trade clause for six specific teams: the Los Angeles Dodgers, Philadelphia Phillies, San Diego Padres, New York Mets, Los Angeles Angels, and Boston Red Sox. While the Angels and Red Sox may not be top contenders next season, they could have the financial flexibility to absorb most, if not all, of Arenado’s contract, which runs through the 2027 season.
Trading Nolan Arenado will be challenging for the Cardinals, as they are well aware of his value and will want to ensure they receive a fair return in any deal. Regardless of whether they trade him or not, it seems the Cardinals are planning for a future without Arenado at third base.
Cardinals plan at third base in 2025 revealed
Derrick Goold, a writer for the St. Louis Post-Dispatch, recently reported on X that the St. Louis Cardinals have revealed their plans for third base in the upcoming season.
This statement suggests that the St. Louis Cardinals are exploring all possibilities to trade Nolan Arenado before the start of the 2025 season. Another option would be moving Arenado to first base, allowing Paul Goldschmidt to become the full-time designated hitter. However, removing a four-time Gold Glove Award winner from the field would be a significant loss.
Although Gorman has faced challenges at the plate during his first three seasons in the majors, the Cardinals organization still sees potential in him as part of their future plans. Given the direction the team seems to be taking, a trade involving Arenado could happen soon, though his ultimate destination remains uncertain.
