Last week, the Boston Red Sox made their first major move of the offseason by trading for Chicago White Sox ace Garrett Crochet. This deal also kept the New York Yankees from acquiring the left-handed pitcher. With outfielder Juan Soto now signed by the New York Mets, the Yankees are searching for ways to fill his spot in their lineup. Reports suggest the Yankees are interested in Santander, a player they’re well-acquainted with after his eight years in the American League East with the Baltimore Orioles.
He had a standout season in 2024, earning his first All-Star selection and winning his first Silver Slugger Award after hitting 44 home runs, driving in 102 RBI, scoring 91 runs, and posting an .814 OPS. With the Baltimore Orioles recently signing outfielder Tyler O’Neill to a three-year contract, a return to Baltimore seems unlikely.
Could Santander bypass the Yankees and end up in Boston instead? FanSided’s Michael Brakebill predicts that could happen. “Boston still needs another starter to round out an elite rotation, but they also need an outfielder. Switch-hitting Anthony Santander seems ideal for hitting over the Green Monster or around the pesky pole,” Brakebill wrote. “He hit 44 homers in 2024, and with Baltimore adding O’Neill, Santander is likely to find a new home this winter.” Spotrac forecasts a five-year, $89 million deal for Santander, but with teams that missed out on Juan Soto now in the mix, his contract could surpass $100 million. Bleacher Report’s Kerry Miller predicts he’ll secure a $100 million guarantee.
