The New York Mets are in urgent need of a starting pitcher, and fortunately, there are numerous options available in free agency. If the Mets decide to be highly proactive, they could also explore potential trade targets. Recently, Michael Brakebill from FanSided predicted that the Mets will strengthen their rotation by signing free agent after a strong 2024 season. However, Jon Heyman of the New York Post forecasts the gifted player will sign a four-year, $72 million contract, though this estimate might be on the lower side.
“It’s no secret the New York Mets need starting rotation help this winter. They landed Clay Holmes, intending to put him in the rotation, but they need someone already used to throwing well over 100 innings in a season,” Brakebill wrote. “Manaea has reached free agency after spending 2024 in New York, and there should be no reason to think they can’t re-up on a contract. Manaea recorded a 3.47 ERA over 182 innings. It was the best showing of his career, and the Mets need more production from him moving forward.”
The Mets’ investment in Manaea in 2024 proved to be a successful move, and doubling down on him could be the simplest route to success in 2025. Manaea would seamlessly slot back into the Mets’ rotation, providing the team with a dependable option at the top. With ample financial flexibility, New York could afford to sign him to a contract worth over $80 million or even $90 million if necessary.
