BREAKING: USD Coyotes land commitment for top talented athletes

Jason Mahowald, the head coach of South Dakota’s swimming and diving team, is excited to announce that 15 new athletes—eight women and seven men—will be joining the program for the 2025-26 academic year.

WOMEN
Dawsyn Green | Fly | LeClaire, Iowa 

A 15-time state qualifier from Pleasant Valley High School in Iowa’s one-class system, she qualified for state four times in both the 200 IM and 100 fly, earning five individual top-eight finishes. As a senior, she placed second in the 200 IM and third in the 100 fly, while also helping her team finish fourth in the 400 free relay and fifth in the 200 medley relay. An honor roll student, she has personal bests of 57.38 in the 100 fly, 2:06.7 in the 200 IM, 4:31.3 in the 400 IM, and 2:05.7 in the 200 fly. The daughter of Natalie and Patrick Green, she plans to major in biology at USD.

Henley Hatzung | Free-Back | Shorewood, Minn.
A nine-time state qualifier for Minnetonka High School in Minnesota Class AA who posted six top five finishers in her career. Placed third in the 100 back and fifth in the 50 free at the state meet as a senior while also helping the Skippers tie for a state title in the 200 medley relay and finish third in the 500 free relay. Led her team to the state team championship in 2024 and a runner-up finish in 2023. An American Sign Language Honor Society Member who owns personal bests of 1:59.16 in the 200 back, 54.69 in the 100 back and 23.11 in the 50 free. The daughter of Colleen Coenen and Nate Hatzung plans to major in nursing at USD

Faith Leitel | Back | Littleton, Colo.
Has competed in seven state meet events, including five point scoring finishes, over her first three seasons helping Heritage High School win a Class 4A state title in 2022 and finish as the Class 5A third-place team in 2023 and again in 2024. Earned All-American honors as part of a state runner-up 400 free relay in 2024. The Academic Honor Roll student owns personal bests of 56.71 in the 100 back and 2:00.90 in the 200 back. The daughter of Bob and Kristin Leitel plans to major in psychology while at USD.

Quin Mahler-Moreno | Free-Breast | Perry, Iowa 
A 15 time state qualifier over four seasons for Perry High School in Iowa’s one-class system. Earned all-state honors as a senior by placing third in the 500 free and fourth in the 100 breast. Qualified for the state finals three times in the 500 free and twice in the 100 breast and 200 free. Four time Iowa Swimming Long Course State Champion. The honor roll student owns personal bests in the 100 breast (1:04.55), 200 free (1:54.35) and 500 free (5:04.01). The daughter of Hilliary Mahler and Quintin Moreno plans to major in kinesiology at USD.

Alex Peterson | Free-Fly | Prior Lake, Minn.
Participated in 13 state meet events, recording nine top 12 finishes, over four seasons for Prior Lake High School in Class AA of Minnesota’s two-class system. The all-state swimmer was a five-time conference champion in the South Suburban Conference. National Honor Society member, Board Scholar and Student Council member owns personal bests of 23.73 in the 50 free, 53.54 in the 100 free and 57.18 in the 100 fly. The daughter of Lyle and Kami Peterson plans to major in medical biology/hospital management while at USD.

Emerson Smith | Back-Free | Mitchell, S.D.
An eight-time state champion in South Dakota who is also a Speedo sectionals qualifier and Futures Championship qualifier. Anchored winning 400 medley relay at Speedo sectionals. Member of state record 400 medley relay. Competed in four events at the USA Swimming Futures Championships in 2024, the 100 free, 100 back, 200 back and 400 medley relay. The National Honor Society and gold honor roll member also competed in gymnastics and track and field while at Mitchell High School. Holds personal bests of 2:04.95 in 200 back, 57.19 in 100 back, 1:55.90 in 200 free and 52.46 in 100 free. The daughter of Jody and Alan Smith plans to major in medical biology

Anna Williams | Diving | Kearney, Mo.
A two-time state diving qualifier heading into her senior season having earned first-team all-state honors following a seventh place finish and honorable mention all-state honors after a 10th place finish. A two-time first-team all-conference diver who also earned all-district honors. Owns personal best of 385.90 for 11 dives and 236.05 for six dives. Academic all-state honoree and member of the Missouri Scholars Academy Alumni. Participated in the pole vault in track and field for Kearney High School. Daughter of Katie Krawczyk & Jody Williams plans to major in exercise science/kinesiology at USD.

Kate Woelfel | Diving | Lino Lakes, Minn.
The six-time varsity letterwinner was a three-time state diving finalist in Class AA of Minnesota’s two-class system while placing eighth as a freshman, 11th as a junior and sixth as a senior. The five-time all-conference diver in the Northwest Suburban Conference was a three-time champion. National Honor Society member and Academic Letter holder owns personal bests for six dives of 290.30 and 11 dives of 417.70. Also competed in track and field and basketball for Centennial High School. The daughter of Shelly Woelfel plans to major in nursing at USD.

MEN
Dylan Alt | Fly-Back-Free | Algona, Iowa 

An eight event state qualifier over his first three seasons in high school in Iowa’s one-class system. Earned four top seven finishes his junior season while competing for Waukee, placing third in the 100 fly and fifth in the 100 back while also swimming on relays that finished third in the 200 medley relay and seventh in the 400 free relay. Swam first two seasons in high school for Fort Dodge where he posted a pair of 11th place finishes (200 free, 100 free) as a sophomore. The National Honor Society member owns personal best of 49.33 in the 100 fly, 1:51.06 in the 200 back and 50.14 in the 100 back. The son of Jodi Alt and Chris Alt plans to major in biology at USD.

Mason Evenson | Diving | Buffalo, Minn.
A state diving participant as a junior in 2024 with a seventh-place finish and a 11-dive finals score of 401.10. Was runner-up at the sectional meet with a personal best over 11 dives of 461.35. The honor roll student was an All-Lake Conference diver and team diving MVP. Also participated in soccer and volleyball at Buffalo High School. The son of Tammy Perkins plans to major in business administration at USD.

Jackson Heinlein-Preseault | Breast-Free | Chicago, Ill.
A four-year varsity swimmer who is a seven-event state qualifier over two seasons for Jones College Prep in Illinois’ one class high school system. Competed in four events at the 2024 state meet as a junior, the 200 medley relay, 400 free relay, 100 breast and 100 free, where he placed 16th. The National Honor Society member and honor roll student owns personal bests in the 100 free of 46.34 and 100 breast of 57.10. The son of J. Preseault and Heather Heinlein plans to major in business at USD.

Maddox Mork | Diving | Prior Lake, Minn.
Earned all-state honors following a fifth-place finish at the Class AA state meet as a junior in 2024. His personal bests of 298.35 for six dives and 454.55 for 11 dives rank second and third, respectively on the Prior Lake all-time charts. Also participated in tennis in high school. The son of Nate Mork and Charise Schrupp plans to major in business while at USD.

Brock Russell | Breast-IM | Mitchell, S.D.
A six-time state champion in six different events in South Dakota. A Futures and Jr. National level swimmer who competed in five events in the USA Swimming Futures Championship in 2024. Owns personal bests of 3:56.52 in the 400 IM, 1:50.66 in the 200 IM and 1:59.91 in the 200 breast. Competed in cross country for Mitchell High School. Son of Allison Russell, an honors student, plans to major in business and finance at USD.

Trey Smith | Back | East Troy, Wisc.
A two-time state place winner in the 100 back while competing for Burlington Co-op in Division I of the Wisconsin two-division state meet. Placed 12th as a sophomore and fifth as a junior, posting a personal best clocking of 51.18. School record holder in four events – 200 free, 100 back, 200 IM, 200 medley relay. Wisconsin State Long Course Champion in 200 back and 100 back. Speedo Winter Junior Championships qualifier in 100 back and 200 back. NCSA Spring and Summer Qualifier in 200 back and 100 back. Has personal bests of 49.33 in the 100 back and 1:46.47 in the 200 back. Also participated in golf and cross country in high school at East Troy. The son of Jay and Kelly Smith plan to major in business at USD.

Tommy Wonka | Breast | Buffalo, Wyo.
A 12 time state qualifier, four events each of his first three seasons competing for Buffalo High School in Wyoming Class 3A, helping the Bison finish as state runners-up in 2024 and 2023. A five-time state champion who also has finished second five times to go with a third-place finish and a fourth-place effort in his three state meets. Has won back-to-back 100 breast state titles after finishing second as a freshman while the 3A state swimmer of the meet in 2024 has helped the Bison win the 200 free relay state title in all three seasons. Has personal best times of 56.41 in the 100 breast and 2:08.06 in the 200 breast. A two-sport all-state and all-conference honoree in swimming and diving and soccer. The son of Richard Wonka and Nicole Wonka, an honor roll student, plans to major in kinesiology at USD.
