The Boston Red Sox entered the offseason with a clear need for significant moves to close the gap with the New York Yankees and Baltimore Orioles in the competitive American League East. After missing out on superstar Juan Soto in free agency, Boston shifted focus to a major trade, acquiring ace Garrett Crochet from the Chicago White Sox. The Red Sox may still pursue another starting pitcher before the season begins. The Seattle Mariners stand out as a potential trade partner, as they are in need of an infielder, and Boston has the flexibility to trade first baseman Triston Casas. While the Mariners are reportedly more inclined to trade Luis Castillo if they move a pitcher, starter Bryan Woo would be a better fit for the Red Sox. A potential trade could involve Woo joining Boston in a deal centered around the promising young star, Triston Casas.
Boston Red Sox receive: RHP Bryan Woo
Seattle Mariners receive: 1B Triston Casas, OF Allan Castro (No. 14 prospect), RHP Luis Guerrero (No. 27 prospect)
Bryan Woo is a highly skilled 24-year-old pitcher who made 22 starts last season, posting an impressive 2.89 ERA. He also excelled in WHIP, finishing with a stellar 0.89 WHIP, placing him among the league’s best. His potential makes him a future top-of-the-rotation ace. Triston Casas, also just 24, is another talented player often overlooked. Despite spending much of last season injured, he posted a strong 129 OPS+ in 2023, and his potential makes him a significant asset in this trade proposal.
In addition, 21-year-old prospect Castro is a well-rounded player with a high floor. Although the Mariners don’t urgently need outfielders, they could use an upgrade in their farm system. Guerrero, a right-handed pitcher, is likely to join the Mariners’ bullpen in 2025, bringing multiple elite pitches and high potential as a reliever. This trade would benefit both teams: the Mariners would gain a talented 24-year-old at a position of need, while also adding two solid prospects to their system.
