HUGE BLOW: Virginia Tech football wide receiver entered the transfer portal.

The past week has been quite eventful for the Virginia Tech football team, marked by coaching changes, the announcement of their bowl destination, and activity in the transfer portal. Additionally, some players have opted out of the bowl game to prepare for the NFL Draft. Speaking of the transfer portal, let’s start there in this update on Virginia Tech Football.

Jackson State Tigers' defensive back KJ Chisholm (17) misses Arkansas-Pine Bluff Golden Lions' wide receiver Javonnie Gibson (11) during the game in Jackson, Miss., on Saturday, Nov. 2, 2024.

Wide Receiver Chance Fitzgerald Enters Transfer Portal
Over the past few seasons, the Hokies have enjoyed strong depth at the wide receiver position. With Ali Jennings, Da’Quan Felton, Stephen Gosnell, and Jaylin Lane returning for another year, the depth chart remained crowded, limiting playing time for younger players. However, with all four receivers departing next season, this opens opportunities for the younger players, except for one.

On Sunday, former four-star recruit Chance Fitzgerald announced via his X account that he is entering the transfer portal. Fitzgerald, a highly-rated recruit, was expected to have a pivotal spring and summer camp to compete for playing time but has now decided to pursue that opportunity at another school.

Wide Receiver in the Portal Plans to Visit Virginia Tech
With Fitzgerald entering the portal and top receivers leaving, the Hokies are looking to add another wide receiver, among other positions, through the portal. One such player, who recently visited SMU, plans to tour Virginia Tech as well.

Javonnie Gibson, a standout wide receiver from Arkansas-Pine Bluff who earned First Team All-SWAC honors this season, is planning a visit to Virginia Tech, along with Cincinnati, Oklahoma State, and Mississippi State. Gibson had an impressive season, recording 70 catches for 1,215 yards and nine touchdowns for the Golden Lions. With Kyron Drones and Pop Watson returning next season, adding key receivers is a priority for Coach Brent Pry and his staff.
