MANHATTAN, KS —The standout wide receiver for the Kansas State Wildcats, has officially announced that he will be transferring away from the program. The decision comes as a surprise to many, as he had been a key player for the Wildcats’ offense during his time in Manhattan.
The 6-foot-1 sophomore, who transferred to Kansas State from Iowa ahead of the 2023 season, made the announcement on social media Sunday, thanking his teammates, coaches, and fans for their support over the past year.
“After much thought and consideration, I’ve decided to enter the transfer portal and explore new opportunities,” He wrote in a statement. “I’m grateful for the time I spent at Kansas State, and I’ll always cherish the relationships I built here. I’m excited for what the future holds.”
He joined Kansas State with high expectations after his freshman season at Iowa, where he recorded 6 catches for 67 yards. Upon his arrival in Manhattan, he quickly became a valuable asset in the Wildcats’ receiving corps. Over the course of the 2023 season, he totaled 24 receptions for 348 yards and 3 touchdowns, showing flashes of the potential that made him a highly sought-after transfer.
His departure adds to a growing list of changes for the Kansas State football program, as head coach Chris Klieman will now look to fill the void left by Johnson’s departure as the Wildcats prepare for the 2024 season.
No specific reasons were given for Johnson’s decision to leave the program, but his exit could signal a shift in the wide receiver group as Kansas State looks ahead to the offseason. Johnson’s decision to enter the transfer portal also marks another notable transfer in college football as players continue to explore opportunities for greater playing time or different programs.
Kansas State fans will be watching closely to see where Johnson lands next, with many predicting that the talented receiver will attract interest from a number of power-conference programs.
As for the Wildcats, they will now shift their focus to building depth at the receiver position ahead of the 2024 season.
