The 25-year-old , who made the Red Sox’s Opening Day roster last season, played multiple positions, including 56 starts at second base, three at third base, and one in left field.
The Pirates announced on Sunday that they have acquired infielder/outfielder from the Boston Red Sox in exchange for minor-league pitcher Joe Vogatsky.
At the plate, Valdez hit .214, recording 43 hits in 201 at-bats, including 12 doubles, six home runs, 28 RBIs, and 23 runs over 76 games.
Valdez made his MLB debut in 2023 after being ranked the 18th-best prospect in the Red Sox organization. Among rookies with at least 100 plate appearances, he ranked 10th in batting average, 13th in slugging, and 16th in OPS.
Valdez was initially signed by Houston as an undrafted free agent in July 2015 before being traded to Boston in 2022 for catcher Christian Vazquez.
With this move, the Pirates now have 37 players on their 40-man roster.
